Lipedema Management
Compassionate Care for a Commonly Misunderstood Condition
Lipedema is a chronic and often painful fat distribution disorder that primarily affects women. It causes a symmetrical buildup of fatty tissue—usually in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes the arms—while sparing the hands and feet. This condition is frequently misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema, leading to frustration and delayed care.
At our clinic, we understand the unique challenges of living with lipedema and offer supportive, evidence-based treatment to help you manage symptoms and feel empowered in your body.
Recognizing Lipedema
You may have lipedema if you experience:
- A disproportionate lower body compared to your upper body
- Painful, tender fat that feels nodular or soft
- Easy bruising in affected areas
- A clear "cuff" or band of swelling at the ankles or wrists (feet and hands are usually not affected)
- Little to no response to traditional diet and exercise in the affected areas
Lipedema often worsens with hormonal changes (e.g., puberty, pregnancy, menopause), and without intervention, it can progress and lead to secondary lymphedema (a condition known as lipo-lymphedema).
Our Approach to Lipedema Care
While lipedema is a lifelong condition, its symptoms can be managed with the right care and education. We offer a holistic, patient-centered approach that includes:
Gentle massage to support lymph flow and reduce discomfort or swelling.
Specialized garments to manage swelling, support tissue health, and improve mobility.
Safe, lymph-friendly exercise plans to support circulation and strength without triggering flare-ups.
We help you understand your body, advocate for your care, and feel less alone in your journey.
If appropriate, we can guide you in exploring surgical options and provide pre- and post-operative lymphatic support.
