What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that results from a buildup of lymphatic fluid in the tissues, leading to swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs. It occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, and it can significantly impact comfort, mobility, and quality of life.

Causes of Lymphedema

Primary Lymphedema
This type is rare and usually caused by inherited or congenital malformations of the lymphatic system. It may develop at birth or later in life during puberty or adulthood.

Secondary Lymphedema
This is more common and results from damage to the lymphatic system due to:

Cancer treatment (such as surgery or radiation involving lymph nodes)
Infection
Injury or trauma
Chronic venous insufficiency
Obesity

Signs and Symptoms

Persistent swelling in the arm, leg, or other areas
A feeling of heaviness or tightness
Limited range of motion
Aching or discomfort
Hardening or thickening of the skin (fibrosis)

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)
This gold-standard treatment includes:
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle, specialized massage that encourages the flow of lymph fluid.
  • Compression Therapy: Use of bandages or garments to maintain reduced swelling and support fluid movement.
  • Skin Care: To reduce risk of infection and maintain healthy tissue.
  • Exercise: Safe movement routines that stimulate lymph flow.
Compression Garments
Custom or off-the-shelf compression sleeves or stockings are essential for long-term management.
Pneumatic Compression Devices
At-home devices that apply intermittent pressure to help reduce swelling.
Education and Self-Management
Empowering patients with knowledge on how to care for their condition daily is vital for long-term success.
